What if the same experience should not be the same for everyone?

An adaptive learning platform begins with decisions about what should change, for whom, and on what evidence. Personalization needs an architecture behind it.

01

The starting point

Personalization needed a precise definition.

Adaptive learning can sound like a single feature. The design problem is more specific: which parts of an experience should change, what evidence should trigger the change, and how the result remains coherent for the learner.

The platform work addressed those questions through a multi-level adaptive architecture. My role connected the learning direction with the requirements needed to define the platform.

02

The work

Describe the decisions before presenting the outcome.

The work produced a formal requirements document and a matrix of sixteen learner personas. These deliverables define what should adapt, for whom, and on what evidence.

The persona matrix forms part of the learner model. It describes the distinctions the design intends to support and makes them explicit within the platform requirements.

03

The design challenge

Keep the experience coherent as it changes.

An architecture has to connect the learner model with decisions about the experience. Different paths still need to belong to a coherent learning design, with a clear reason for each change.

This is why the work extends beyond presenting different content. Requirements make the intended behavior explicit enough to be discussed and evaluated before it is treated as a demonstrated result.

04

Current evidence

A defined architecture, with outcomes still to be established.

The evidence described here is the requirements work, the multi-level design, and the sixteen-persona matrix. These are design deliverables, rather than measured evidence of better learning or institution-wide adoption.

The question carried forward is how to establish that an adaptive decision was appropriate for a learner. That question sits at the center of evaluating the platform as it moves beyond its design.
